Finding the right therapist is all about fit, but it can be hard to know what that means. Fit means that you agree on what your goals, strengths, and concerns are, what the right plan is moving forward, and what therapy should be like. Research shows that the best therapeutic outcomes come with a shared vision of the process together.
To give some examples: some people want to change their thoughts, some want to sit deeply in their emotions, some want to accept the present with equanimity, some want to process their past experiences, some want immediately actionable solutions for their problems, some want a long standing relationship wherein they can talk about their inner workings, some want a quick series of appointments where they can learn more about healthier behaviors and practice them. The more you think about what kind of help would feel right for you, the better you can find a good fit in a therapist.
Questions you could ask could be: what do you think actually helps people change and grow? how will we know therapy is successful and we can terminate? and what does a session with you look like?

I primarily base my work in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), meaning that I believe most people will benefit from increasing their level of psychological flexibility. I layer this with relational approaches that help you use this increased flexibility to show up intentionally in your relationships and make values-aligned choices, even if they may mean more short term discomfort. I am not a great fit for people solely looking for immediate, short-term solutions, basic emotional regulation skills, or ways to change what they think or believe. Clients achieve best results with me when they already have decent emotional regulation and introspection, and they are seeking a deeper exploration of how they function (and would like to function instead) in relation to themselves and others.

Go straight to the Schedulingpage to schedule a free consultation directly on my calendar! During the consultation I’ll ask you more about what you would like help with and more, your history with therapy, your preferences for a therapist, etc. If I determine that we might not be a great fit and I know of someone who might be, I will pass their contact information on to you.

I am a dual Resident in Counseling (license no. 0704019536) and Marriage and Family Therapy (license no. 0730000843). What that means is that I am working towards full licensure under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Counselor, Megan MacCutcheon (license no. 0701005482), and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Stefania Gheorghiu (license no. 0717002051). I meet with each of them regularly to get feedback on my work.
